In envisioning the life we want for ourselves there are no goals that are too big for us to attain. However, we sometimes find ourselves resistant to setting goals that are too grand in fear that they are too far out of reach. We may not believe we have the patience or tenacity to reach those goals, that we may become jaded or frustrated with the continued efforts required to reach a desired outcome in our life that may take months or years to accomplish.
It is often said that we need to keep our eye on the prize when we set out to accomplish any goal that is highly ambitious. The truth is, the more ambitious the goal, the longer it takes and the further away it is from us. It is difficult to keep our eye on something that is extremely far on the horizon.
We can benefit by remembering that every grandiose endeavor is comprised of several smaller goals. At the halfway point to our big dream we will find an accomplishment we can mark as having been attained. Within that span is another halfway point, and each of those points can be divided into a multitude of achievements that can be reached.
We do not have to be able to make out the details of our big dream with the naked eye to know whether or not we are getting closer. We simply need to break the path into a great number of checkpoints and mini-goals, goals that we know we can attain in a short time or a single step. With each step we take we can count another one taken toward the number required to reach our destination. Not only does each step get us closer to our goal, it reinforces our faith in knowing we are moving forward. The horizon may not appear to be nearer than it was before, but our accomplished step can remind us that our eye is deceiving us, yet our heart is telling us the truth.
